The Power of Gratitude

Gratitude is to be able to say thank you for what you have. Happiness will never come to those who fail to appreciate what they already have. If you think for a moment you probably will find hundreds of things to be grateful for; In fact, if you stop for a second in the morning as soon as you wake up in the morning and think about three things that you are grateful for, that will help you to be happy the rest of the day.

But you may say: I do not have three things to be grateful for and I will say: you are right, you do not have three things but a lot of them, let's mention a few: you were able to wake up - a lot of people did not have a chance to see this beautiful day, you were able to get up, to prepare breakfast for your family- millions of people do not have the money to buy anything or they live in places where even though they have money, they can either buy anything to eat, you were able to get ready to go to work - a lot of people do not have a job and will be very happy to trade places with you, you are able to see, to hear, to think, etc.as you can see there are a lot of things to be grateful for.

In fact, let me tell you about an article I was reading the other day. The article is about Amy Purdy. As a 19-year-old girl fresh from high school, Amy was an employed massage therapist who enjoy sports. One day at work, she began experiencing flu-like symptoms so she left early and went home to rest. By the next day her condition worsened , so much so that she was rushed to the hospital. She was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis. As her condition worsen, she was given less than a two percent chance of survival. Doctors were eventually forced to amputate both of her legs from the knee down due to loss of circulation. She spent nearly three weeks in a coma. Emerging from this sudden trauma, Amy refused to allow the circumstances to defeat her and made the conscious decision to continue to pursue her passions.

"At the age of 19, you think you're invincible, and you have no idea about the things that can happen", She said: "it was hard to imagine what my life would be like without both my legs, but I had to grow up fast. One of the main things I focused on was what I was grateful for- it allowed me to focus on what I had, rather than what I had lost. I focus onto the positive things in my life."

Amy worked with doctors , therapists and experts and with pair of prosthetics legs she was able to walk again, and not only that, she woke up every day, put on her prosthetics legs and work out, and with a lot of dedication and determination started to practice sports again and even starting competing in snowboarding events.

It is amazing what people can accomplish when they are grateful for what they have, but the most important thing about been grateful for what you have is that when you realize that you have plenty of things to be grateful for, your mood changes and you become a happier person.
